Boilers are sturdy, but they’re not invincible. They usually give warning signs before breaking down completely. Knowing what to look for can save you a lot of hassle – and potentially keep your family safe.
1. Strange or Loud Noises
Banging, whistling or gurgling often means limescale, trapped air, or failing parts. Don’t ignore it – left untreated it can damage the boiler.
2. Leaks or Drips
Any sign of water where it shouldn’t be is a concern. Leaks reduce pressure and can corrode internal parts.
3. Unusual Smells
Burning smells, or anything like sulphur, should ring alarm bells. If you smell gas, call the emergency number immediately.
4. Pilot Light or Flame Issues
If the flame keeps going out or burns yellow instead of blue, it could mean incomplete combustion – a serious safety risk.
5. Loss of Pressure
Constantly topping up your boiler pressure is not normal. It usually points to a leak or faulty valve.
6. No Hot Water or Heating
The most obvious sign something’s wrong. If your boiler isn’t doing its basic job, call an engineer.
7. Carbon Monoxide Alarm Triggered
Never ignore it. Switch off the boiler, open windows, leave the property, and call for help.
If you spot any of these warning signs, don’t wait for the boiler to stop completely. Calling a qualified engineer quickly can mean the difference between a small repair and a full replacement
