Few things are more frustrating than switching on the heating and finding lukewarm radiators or a cold house. Here are the five most common reasons why your boiler isn’t heating properly.
1. Low Pressure
If the pressure gauge is below one bar, your boiler won’t circulate hot water effectively. Topping it up may solve the issue, but a constantly dropping pressure points to a leak or faulty valve.
2. Air or Sludge in the System
Trapped air or sludge build-up prevents radiators from heating evenly. Bleeding radiators can help, but a professional power flush may be needed for stubborn blockages.
3. Thermostat Problems
A faulty or outdated thermostat may not send the right signals. Sometimes it’s a simple battery replacement; other times an upgrade is needed.
4. Frozen Condensate Pipe
In cold weather, the condensate pipe can freeze, shutting the system down. Carefully thawing it can get the boiler working again.
5. Worn or Faulty Parts
Pumps, fans, and valves all wear out eventually. If none of the above apply, it’s time for an engineer to investigate.
Most heating issues stem from common, fixable problems. But if your boiler repeatedly struggles, don’t ignore it – it could be a sign of deeper trouble.
